Fly & Drive Cape and Gardenroute

13 days

Our Fly & Drive routes are the perfect travelling option if you like to take non-flyers along. As you are hitting the South African skies, we will organise a respective ground programme for your family and friends.

As you will be flying with one of our safety pilots at all time, only limited time is necessary for your daily preparation - time spare to enjoy Cape Town and surroundings with your loved ones as well.

Day 1: After your arrival in Cape Town you will have time to relax and settle into the holiday mood. Depending on your own preferences you will be staying either in town or in the green winelands of Stellenbosch.

Day 2: Early in the morning you will be heading back to the airport to meet your instructor for the coming days. After your briefing and discussion of planning for the upcoming days you will finally take off into South African skies. Take it easy and settle in on a flight of approxiamtely 1 1/2 hours to see Stellenbosch and Cape Town from above. In the afternoon you are free and can enjoy discovery times with your travelling companions.

Day 3: Today you will be heading along the coast of the Indian Ocean towards Mossel Bay for lunch. Choose your return route and either follow the coast line back or fly further inlands parallel to the coast (flight time approx. 4 hours).

Day 4: Let's go North into the dryer region and the beginning of the Karoo. Once again you will land for a short break, this time in Brandvlei.

Day 5: Your last day of flying will bring you to the coast of the Southern Atlantic ocean. You stop in Doring bay for a quick break before heading back to Cape Town. Finish your flying adventure with one last round next to Table Mountain.

To do's for non-aviators: Needless to say, there are plenty of things to discover on the ground. It is easy enough to spend a day or two in Cape Town itself. We highly recommend the good old red Hop on&off busses to get a first impression and enjoy the different stops at the peninsula. For sure a day at Cape Point is worth a trip with a stop to see the Cape penguins. Another day can easily be spend on a wineyard tour in the Stellenbosch area. Do not just enjoy the green surroundings and the wine tastings but also a short break of the city buzz.

Whatever takes the fancy of your non aviator companions we are happy to organize for the days that you are in the air!

In 4 flying days you will cover 1.200 nm and get 11 hours in the air

Day 6: In the morning you will start the second part of your holiday, the self-drive of the Garden Route. Officially the route start at Mossel Bay and ends in Stormsriver, the total distance from Cape Town is around 700 km. And Mossel Bay is where you will be heading to today (380 km).

You will arrive in the early afternoon and have time to discover the small village, the Dias Museum which tells the town's history or you are heading out to the Cape St. Blaize cave, the site of some of South Africa’s first Middle Stone Age archaeological excavations. There are guided tours available for those keen on history but the cave itself is accessible to the general public. Just wear comfortable shoes and clothes for the short but steep walk.

Day 7: Mossel Bay is very nice but even nicer places are waiting for you. As your next night stop Wilderness would only be 70km away if you follow the coastal route, we suggest to make a little detour up North to Oudtshoorn. From here you will later go back to the coastal town George and on to Wilderness (a total drive of 170 km).

Visit the famous Cango caves or one of the numerous ostrich farms in Oudtshoorn before heading on to George. After a stop to stretch your legs and do some shopping you have 2 options: continue on the N2 along the coast or take the 1st two passes of the Seven Passes Route further inlands.

You want to give Oudtshoorn a miss? Then we suggest to take the coastal route all the way up to Knysna which will still just be a 120 km drive.

Day 8: Today will be just a short drive (85 km) with lots of fantastic breaks along the way. From Wilderness you head East, passing Sedgefield and stopping in Knysna. From the Knysna head you are able to enjoy a stunning view of the area. Why not relax at Noetzie beach or visit the castle or discover the town on an electric bike? You feel active? Go paddling around the lagoon or challenge your balance on a SUP. It is too hot? Head to Knysna forest for some shade before continuing towards Plettenberg Bay.

Day 9: Relax a day at "Plett". The main beach is nice to simply soak up some sunhine but you are now also at the adventure capital of the Garden Route.

Fancy a boat trip to see the Cape fur seals? You can even go swim with them.

Zip-lining, hiking, canoying? Plett offers it all - you just have to chose!

Day 10: The last part of the Garden Route will again just be a short drive from Plettenberg Bay via Nature's Valley to Stormsrivier (75 km).

The drive is relatively short but nevertheless stunning as you will pass a few canyons including the famous Bloukrans bridge, the highest bungee jump in the world.

If you want to stop on the way enjoy the tranquility of the beach towns Keurboomstrand or Nature's Valley which will also get you through the Grootrivier Pass.

Day 11: From Stormsrivier it is only a 20 minutes drive to Tsisikamma National Park so why not heading there. The afternoon you might enjoy a kayal tour with great views of Storms River canyon (no worries, there are no strong currents in the river) or walk the two bridges crossing the river's mouth.

Day 12: Time to head back - and unfortunately you have a long drive of nearly 600 km ahead of you. To ease the pressure we suggest to stay for one more night in either Stellenbosch or Cape Town so you do not have to worry about missing your return flights.

Day 13: Spend another day at your favourite sights of the Cape of discover something new before heading back to Europe in the evening.
